Steven Meurrens spoke at the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia’s Working Your Way into Canada Conference.  The subject was Business Visitors.

Vivian Yuen presents on the topic of LMIA-exempt work permits at Continuing Legal Education (CLE) of BC’s Working Your Way Into Canada 2015 course.

Krisha Dhaliwal recently had a paper she co-authored published in the Canadian Journal of Family Law, Volume 29, Number 2. It’s titled “Race is not a determinative factor: Mixed race children and Custody Cases in BC”.  It was co-authored by Susan B. Boyd.

Steven Meurrens, with the assistance of Will Tao, was successful in Federal Court by overturning an exclusion order made against our client by a CBSA Port of Entry officer.  The Federal Court agreed that CBSA cannot issue exclusion orders for alleged non-compliance with work permit conditions, and instead must refer the matter to the Immigration and Refugee Board. The decision was released on 17 September 2015.

Associate counsel Lorne Waldman successfully represented Zunera Ishaq in the Federal Court of Appeal.  Ishaq refused to remove her face covering at citizenship ceremony for religious reasons.  The Federal Court agreed with her and ordered the government to change its policy banning face coverings.  The government appealed this decision.  The Federal Court of appeal dismissed the appeal a day after the hearing in order to enable Ushaq to be sworn in quickly so she can participate in Canada’s October 16, 2015 national election.

Peter Larlee, with the assistance of Will Tao, was successful in Federal Court by overturning an exclusion order made against our client by a CBSA Port of Entry officer.  The decision was released on 3 September 2015.

Steven Meurrens has received consent from the Ministry of Employment and Social Development that its decision to refuse a Labour Market Impact Assessment for a local restaurant was unreasonable, and the refusal has been set aside. This was Larlee Rosenberg’s first judicial review application of an ESDC decision to refuse a LMIA.

Peter Larlee and Ryan Rosenberg have each been ranked as leading Vancouver based practitioners of Canadian immigration law  in the 2015 Canadian Lexpert Directory.

Vivian Yuen is presenting at S.U.C.C.E.S.S. in Vancouver on the changes to grants of Canadian citizenship.

Vivian Yuen  has been appointed Chair of the Burnaby Board of Trade’s Pacific Gateway Committee.

Peter Larlee appeared in Federal Court on May 21, 2015 and argued a case  regarding a US citizen who had been excluded from Canada for one year.  The position of the Canada Border Services Agency was that the US citizen had taken up permanent residence in Canada.  We argued that he had not taken up permanent residence but was living in Canada temporarily to support his girlfriend who was going through difficult time because of health issues in her family.  The US citizen was working  regularly in the US and owned property in the US.  We argued that the exclusion order should be cancelled because the client maintained both the intention to live temporarily in Canada and to establish permanent residence in the future as contemplated by the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, Regulations.  The decision of the Court is reserved.

Peter Larlee, Ryan Rosenberg, Steven Meurrens and Will Tao all attended the Canadian Bar Association Immigration Law Conference in Ottawa.  Ryan Rosenberg and Steven Meurrens also presented at the Conference.  Over 500 immigration lawyers, government officials and immigration consultants attended the annual three day conference.
